DJ Morgan Ukuleles are handmade by Dave Morgan who is based in the UK. I commissioned a 5 string tenor ukulele from Dave in 2017. The 5 string tenor has a double G string – i.e. high g and low G. The technique is to pluck both strings simultaneously so they sound ‘as one’. This produces the double octave and creates some interesting possibilities. The top of the ukulele is cedar and the back and sides are walnut. Although I am mostly a fan of soprano ukuleles I wanted the 5 string tenor for some folk arrangements and Renaissance music. I found tuning it a semitone lower than normal gives a very interesting and beautiful tonality.
